iPhone: how to preserve your smartphone’s battery

The topic comes up at every Apple conference dedicated to the presentation of its new iPhone: battery life. The company insists every time on the fact that the batteries of its new devices are more efficient than those of the previous generations.

It is a statement that is difficult to verify since an iPhone’s battery rarely lasts more than a day, while the competition offers phones that can be used intensively for up to two days. However, there are solutions to preserve the battery life of your iPhone.

When to recharge the battery?

iPhone batteries have an estimated lifespan of 3 to 5 years before losing storage capacity. To avoid damaging them too quickly, avoid switching from 0 to 100% of the battery and keep a charge level between 40 and 80%. Thus, several short moments of charging during the day are preferable to a full charge overnight; it will be beneficial for your iPhone but also the planet. On the other hand, you can do a complete recharging cycle (from 0% to 100% battery) once a month to recalibrate the battery.

Why does an iPhone get hot?

If you have had an iPhone for several months and it tends to heat up, it is possible that the battery is the cause. It is then necessary to go to an approved repairer and have it replaced. Before performing this operation, check that the problem does not come from the charger by checking its condition. In any case, prefer an original charger and cable to reduce the risk of overheating.

If an iPhone gets hot, it can also be due to a large number of files, documents, and applications that force the device to consume a lot of CPU and therefore to discharge itself quickly. Remember to delete apps that you no longer use to free up space and regularly clear Safari’s cache and browsing history.

Which iPhone has the best battery capacity?

The iPhone with the most extended battery life are usually the larger models, namely the Plus versions or recently the iPhone XS Max. Apple puts indications on the autonomy of its devices on its site, and the one that holds the gold award is, therefore, the iPhone XR which is paradoxically the cheapest of the new range. In Internet browsing, the XR offers 15 hours versus 13 hours for the XS Max while for video playback, the XR provides 16 hours of autonomy versus 15 hours for the XS Max.

When to change the battery of your iPhone?

When your iPhone’s battery life decreases, it may mean that the battery needs to be changed. First, check that there are no signs of wear on the Lightning cable in your charger and that the Lightning port on the phone still works correctly.

If after these checks the iPhone still holds the charge so little, go to the Phone Settings and then to the Battery section. Apple had the right idea to insert a diagnostic tool into its smartphones: if the message “Your iPhone battery may need repair” is displayed at the top of the screen, it means that your battery is at the end of its life.
